Montsant Wine

The Monsant denomination of origin was created in 2001, and it originally formed part o the Tarragona DO. Wines extend over the county of the Priorat (South of Tarragona) in more than 16 municipalities. The Mediterranean climate is favored by the isolation of the mountains, which favors the temperature contrasts and which in turn benefits grape maturity. Humid winds (the gabirnada) from the sea make up for the lack of rain during the summer. The soil has 3 characteristics: compact and calcareous, limestone and at a height that exceeds 200 meters (700 and below).

The vineyard of the Montsant denomination of origin extends over 2,000 hectares, and it has seen an increase in the number of wineries (50) that massively export wines to the United States and Germany. It produces more than 10 million kilograms of grapes and more than 800 producers.

The white grape varieties used are: Garnacha Blanca, Macabeo, Moscatel, Pansal, Parellada and Chardonnay, the most traditional ones being the first 2.

The red wines of Montsant have a full body, and strains used for this production are mainly Cariñena and Grenache. Wines are also produced from: cabernet sauvignon, garnacha pluda, Merlot, Monastrell, Syrah, Tempranillo, Carignan or picapoll.
